Welcoming a new life…

Planting good seeds...

I recently welcomed my new son into this world; this has been a time of deep reflection. Throughout my life I have prepared for this moment. I was not the girl who fantasized about my perfect wedding dress or the color of my picket fence; I did however, put much thought into the fact that one day, I would bring a new life into this world. To me there are few things more powerful. I promised myself that when this day came, I would do everything in my power to make sure that I not only took care of this life but have the ability to show my child the road map of life to the best of my ability.

As I enter into this new stage of life I remember the words of my mentor on bringing a new life into this world…

It is one thing to plant a seed, but how you take care of that seed and how you help it to grow are most significant. You cannot water it too much or too little, you cannot give it too much sun or too little sun. You must make sure that the soil has a good balance of fertilizer. You have to make sure to pick the weeds as it grows into a plant so that it can grow on its own despite the weeds that will inevitably sprout up around it throughout its lifetime. This is the principle of parenting.

I do not wish for him undue happiness, as life is filled with ups and downs. I do not wish for him material success, as materials come and go. I do not wish that he is never hurt, as hurt is inevitable. I wish for him to be grounded…solid…so that when he experiences the peaks and valleys of life he is not moved. I wish for him the ability to see right from wrong and to be able to handle all that life has planned for him, and along this path my greatest wish is for him to make a positive impact in this world, to earn in his lifetime and leave behind a legacy of goodness.
